The Michigan City Rifle Club was originally founded in 1931 by mainly Smallbore Shooters. The Club has been affiliated with the National Rifle Association since that time.
The first range was on the second floor of an automobile agency (formerly a livery stable) at the corner of Michigan and Washington streets in Michigan City. In 1940 the Club aquired the use of a loft above the floor of the South Shore Railroad car repair shop. That range was just big enough for 6 firing positions, a 50 foot range and a small meeting area. A few matches were actually held outdoors in the CITY LIMITS!
In about 1950 the group of Small Bore shooters purchased the present 15 acres. A back stop was raised, trees were cleared, and target holders were installed at 50 and 100 yards. Two railroad cars were donated by the South Shore RR. One was used for storage, and the other for statistical computations and scoring. The cabooses were later destroyed by arson and the present Field house and storage buildings were constructed. In 1952, the Indoor Range/Club House was built. This building incorporates the 50 feet, 12 position indoor firing range and meeting area. Completion was accomplished with membership labor, personal loans and donations.
The club owes its past progress to a nucleus of Small Bore shooters and a Junior Club which are no longer active. Many divisions and activities have been created over the years and are still very active. The club has also been host to Hunter Education classes and Women's Firearms Training.
For over 75 years The Club has grown and prospered on nominal dues and volunteer contributions and efforts of the membership. |
